No. 16 Warriors Pitch Shutouts Against Shippensburg, Wilmington

CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 16 Winona State softball team earned a pair of shutouts Wednesday morning in Florida, topping Shippensburg 8-0 in six innings before an eight-inning 1-0 win over Wilmington (Del.)

GAME ONE: WSU 8, Shippensburg 0 (6 inn.)

The Warriors used a five-run first inning to cruise to an 8-0 win over the Raiders. Chelsey Rodenkirch brought home the first run of the game with an RBI fielder's choice to plate Jamee Schleis. She later scored along with McKenna Larsen on a 2 RBI triple from Natalie Kalmes to make it 3-0. Shortly after, Paige Keegan doubled home Kalmes and Allyson O'Herron singled to score Keegan as WSU assembled the quick 5-0 lead.

A pair of Raider miscues – a throwing error to first by the Shippensburg pitcher and a subsequent fielding error by the second baseman –  on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Lani Van Zyl allowed Shannon Nelson to score in fourth inning to push it to 6-0. Van Zyl scored in the sixth inning on another fielding error by the second baseman and an RBI groundout by Shleis scored Reed Karsten to end the game in the sixth with the 8-0 win.

Hanna Lythberg (6-1) held the Raiders to just four hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

GAME TWO: WSU 1, Wilmington 0 (8 inn.)

It took the Warriors eight innings to cross home plate in game two, but it was the one that mattered.

Scoreless through seven innings, the Warriors quickly benefited from international tiebreaker rules. With Schleis placed on second to start extras, Larsen and Rodenkirch each struck out swinging, but Kalmes provided the two-out hit – a double to left center field to score Schleis and put WSU on the board.

It's all the Warriors would need, as Alex Walker shut the door and completed the eight-inning shutout. Walker gave up just five hits with two walks and two strikeouts while needing just 92 pitches.

Winona State (13-3) concludes the NTC Spring Games Thursday with matchups against Northwood and Holy Family at 8 and 10 a.m. (CST).
