WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State softball team split a doubleheader with MSU Moorhead Saturday on a warm and beautiful spring afternoon at Alumni Field. The Warriors dropped game one 3-2 before rebounding for a 3-0 victory in game two on Senior Day.
GAME ONE: MSU Moorhead 3, WSU 2
The Warriors scored first and last in the opener, but it wasn't enough as the Dragons scored runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to claim the game one win.
Trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, Mariah Schultz led off the inning just how the Warriors had hoped, lining a deep double over the fielder's head in center field to put a runner in scoring position. She'd eventually score on a Jamee Schleis single down the right field line, but that came after back-to-back swinging strikeouts. WSU's rally officially came up short with a Paige Keegan groundout to end the game.
The Warriors opened the game in promising fashion, as the bottom of the first was highlighted by a McKenna Larsen double down the left field line that scored Reed Karsten to give the Warriors an early 1-0 lead.
The Dragons tied the game up in the fourth with an RBI single and took the lead in the sixth with a solo home run to left field before adding the all-important insurance run in the seventh with another run-scoring single.
Hanna Lythberg (15-7) scattered seven hits and struck out five in seven innings while allowing three earned runs to pick up the loss.
GAME TWO: WSU 3, MSU Moorhead 0
The Warriors responded with a win in game two thanks to a two-hit shutout by pitcher McKenna Larsen (8-3), who tossed seven innings of scoreless softball with four strikeouts.
Like game one, the Warriors got on the board early with a first inning sacrifice fly by Natalie Kalmes to score Reed Karsten. Later in the inning, Lani Van Zyl made it a 2-0 game with an RBI single to left field that plated Jamee Schleis.
WSU added to the lead in the second inning with a Paige Keegan RBI double down the left field line to score Karsten for the second time in as many innings and up the lead to 3-0, which would remain for the rest of the game.
Winona State (29-13) returns to Alumni Field Sunday for a doubleheader with Northern State beginning at 1 p.m.
