WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of Mary Sunday afternoon at Loughrey Field in a pair of games moved to Winona due to poor weather in Bismarck. WSU claimed the opener 11-3 before falling 7-1 in the nightcap.
GAME ONE: WSU 11, MARY 3
Jay Voter went the distance to improve to 2-2 on the season and the Warrior offense gave the senior plenty of run support as the Warriors cruised to the 11-3 victory.
Voter scattered nine hits in seven innings, allowing three earned runs with six strikeouts and just one walk.
The Warriors jumped out to an early lead with a two-run single up the middle by Taylor Field for a pair of unearned runs, scoring Mitch Voter and Ryan Nyhagen and taking a quick 2-0 lead.
WSU used a six-run third inning to blow the game open, as an RBI double by Tyler Nehring and a two-run double by Mitch Heid stretched the lead to 5-0. A fielding error allowed Heid to eventually score to move ahead 6-0 before a two-run single by Nyhagen made it an 8-0 Warrior advantage after three innings.
The lead grew even larger in the fourth inning with a pair of towering home runs by Jesus Cazares and Mitch Voter to post a 10-0 lead.
Mary got on the board in the fifth with an RBI double, but Nyhagen drew a bases loaded walk in the top of the seventh to make it 11-1. The Marauders scored a pair in the bottom of the inning but the Warriors cruised to the 11-3 victory.
GAME TWO: MARY 7, WSU 1
A three-run home run in the first inning gave U-Mary an early lead and never looked back to claim game two.
The Warriors cut into the lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Nehring to cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Marauders answered with a run in the fourth and picked up three more in the sixth to claim the 7-1 win.
Daniel Karlin-Kamin (1-5) allowed seven hits and five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings but struck out five batters. Parker Holmstrom was solid in relief, throwing 2 1/3 hitless innings with a strikeout.
Winona State and U-Mary play two more Monday with a doubleheader beginning at noon at Loughrey Field.
