Warriors Drop Doubleheader to Minnesota Duluth 13-7, 14-8

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Minnesota Duluth by scores of 13-7 and 14-8 Sunday in the Warriors' home openers at Loughrey Field.

GAME ONE: UMD 13, WSU 7

The Bulldogs hit six home runs to power their way to a win over the Warriors in game one. UMD smashed a three-run home run in the second inning and a two-run homer in the third to take a 5-0 lead. The Warriors got a pair of unearned runs back in the bottom of the third, but the Bulldogs scored six in the fourth to break the game open as a pair of three-run home runs increased the lead to 11-2.

An RBI triple by Joe Kubera and an RBI groundout from Andrew Geislinger chipped into the deficit to make it 11-4 and a two-run home run by Taylor Field in the sixth cut it to 11-6, but UMD scored two more on a pair of solo home runs in the seventh to up the lead to 13-6 before an RBI double by Geislinger finished off the 13-7 final.

Mitchell Stalsberg (1-4) gave up eight earned runs on eight hits but struck out seven batters.

GAME TWO: UMD 14, WSU 8

Game two continued the power theme with a first inning UMD home run to take an early 1-0 lead, but Mitch Voter singled home Joe Kubera in the bottom of the inning to even it at 1-1.

UMD took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single in the second, but it was another big inning – this time a five-run fourth – that helped the Bulldogs jump out to a commanding lead again with a 7-1 advantage. Mitch Voter recorded his second straight RBI single up the middle to make it 7-2, but three runs in each of the next two innings had UMD up 13-2.

The Warriors successfully staved off the 10-run rule with a pair of runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs completed the sweep with the 14-8 win in the nightcap.

Mitch Voter went 3-for-3 in game two with 2 RBI to lead the Warriors.

Winona State (3-15) plays another doubleheader against the Bulldogs tomorrow at noon at Loughrey Field.
