WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State baseball team dropped game one of a doubleheader to Minnesota State 6-0 Saturday afternoon in front of a season-high 516 people for alumni weekend at a cloudy and chilly-turned rainy Loughrey Field in Winona.
Game two was suspended after a brief rain delay with Minnesota State leading 2-1 in the top of the fifth. The game will resume at noon Sunday at Loughrey Field and will become a seven-inning game. Both regularly-scheduled games Sunday also will become seven-inning games.
GAME ONE: MSU 6, WSU 0
The Mavericks' Luke Waldek belted a solo home run to left field and tacked on five runs – three earned – in the top of the fifth to cruise to a 6-0 game one victory.
WSU managed just three hits in the opener – one each from Joe Kubera, Jesus Cazares and Mitch Voter.
GAME TWO: MSU 2, WSU 1 (SUSPENDED)
With a light rain becoming progressively heavier, the Warriors took an early lead in the bottom of the third when a leadoff double by Michael Hommes turned into a run when Joe Kubera produced an RBI groundout to give WSU a 1-0 lead.
But the Mavericks answered back with two runs in the top of the fifth and were still threatening when conditions became unplayable and a rain delay turned into a suspension.
