WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State baseball team swept a doubleheader with Bemidji State Saturday, winning 7-4 in an eight-inning game one before picking up a 6-4 win in the seven-inning nightcap.
GAME ONE: WSU 7, BSU 4
Tied at 4-4 headed into extra innings, the Warriors broke through for three runs in the top of the eighth to claim the win. Joe Kubera produced the would-be game winning run by sending a ball through the left side to score Paul Mutch for a 5-4 lead. Later a sac fly from Ryan Nyhagen scored Kipp Youngquist and Kubera eventually scored on a fielding error by the third baseman to move ahead 7-4. Closer Mitch Voter then struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth for his second save of the season.
The Beavers scored a run in each of the game's first three innings and led 3-1 through four – Taylor Field produced an RBI groundout in the second inning – but the Warriors cut into the deficit when Jesus Cazares hit a two-run single down the left field line in the fifth inning.
BSU retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single up the middle, but the Warriors tied it up once again in the sixth with an RBI single from Youngquist.
Kubera (2-0) picked up his second win of the season, tossing two innings of perfect baseball with no hits and one strikeout in relief of starter Jay Voter, who tossed five innings while scattering eight hits and three earned runs.
GAME TWO: WSU 6, BSU 4
With game two going to extra innings, game two became a seven inning contest, and the Warriors used scoring in the middle innings to build a 6-1 lead after five. The Warriors got on the board with a third inning sac fly by Joe Kubera before an RBI double by Bemidji State brought the score even at 1-1.
WSU scored three runs in the fourth led by Mitch Voter's fourth home run of the season. Nathan Krause scored Tyler Nehring with an RBI groundout to up the lead to 3-1 before Andrew Geislinger singled up the middle for the 4-1 lead.
Jesus Cazares increased the cushion to 6-1 with a two-run homer to left field in the fifth inning before the Beavers fought back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Warriors' threat to add insurance runs was quickly thwarted in the top of the seventh with a rare triple play turned by BSU as a Taylor Field deep fly ball to right field caught the baserunners off guard, ending in a 9-3-4 putout.
But the Warriors wouldn't need the runs as Mitch Voter came on again to earn his second save of the day with a pair of strikeouts and a harmless fly ball to end it.
Daniel Karlin-Kamin (1-4) earned his first win as a Warrior tossing 5 2/3 innings while scattering nine hits with just one earned run along with a pair of strikeouts.
Winona State (8-16, 5-6 NSIC) plays two more against the Beavers with first pitch set for noon Sunday at Loughrey Field.
