Warriors' Season Ends With Losses to Concordia

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State baseball team's season came to a close Saturday after a dropping a doubleheader to Concordia-St. Paul at Loughrey Field. WSU lost the opener 2-1 before falling 12-8 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: CSP 2, WSU 1

Winona State had an excellent opportunity to salvage a game in the series in the opener, but a seventh-inning rally propelled the Golden Bears past the Warriors in a low-scoring game one.

After starter Mitchell Stalsberg fanned the Golden Bears in order to lead off the game, WSU scored first in the bottom of the inning when a leadoff walk by Joe Kubera turned into the game's first run after Mitch Voter singled him home for a 1-0 lead.

That run held up until the top of the seventh, when Voter's attempt at his seventh save of the season went awry. Voter started out the inning in typical fashion, fanning his first two batters faced, but after walking a batter, a single by CSP's Tanner Holmquist put a pair of runners on base for Ryan Poppitz, who doubled home two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Voter fanned his third batter to end the threat, and WSU placed a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the inning, but was unable to take advantage, falling 2-1.

Stalsberg pitched six fantastic innings, giving up just one hit with nine strikeouts but ended with a no decision.

GAME TWO: CSP 12, WSU 8

Concordia scored three runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to storm out to another big lead. The Warriors picked up a run on an RBI double by Ryan Nyhagen and an RBI single by Jesus Cazares in those innings, but WSU trailed 8-2 through four.

CSP added another run in the top of the fifth on a solo home run to right center field before WSU scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI triple by Nyhagen and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Nehring to cut the lead to 9-4.

A 3-run shot by Eric Fasnacht pushed the Golden Bears' lead back to 12-4, but an RBI single from Taylor Field and a three-run bomb from Michael Hommes helped trim the lead to just 12-8 before Nathan Krause struck out to end the game.

Winona State narrowly missed out on postseason play with the NSIC Tournament bracket released Saturday evening. The Warriors end their season with a 17-30-1 record with a 14-20-1 mark in NSIC play.
