BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The #21 Winona State Warriors (3-0) stayed perfect after a pair of sweeps on Friday in Michigan. The day started with a 25-15, 25-20, 25-17 win against Lake Superior State. A few hours later they would sweep West Virginia State 25-17, 25-13, 25-19. The Warriors hit over .300 in three of the six sets on the day.
Lake Superior State took an early lead in the first set but the Warriors easily overcame the deficit with four straight points to take a 6-4 lead. With the set tied at eight Winona scored six straight points, sparked by three straight service aces by
Maria Fruechte. The Lakers could not recover and Winona State won by ten.
The Warriors momentum carried over to the second set as they jumped out to an 8-2 lead. Four attack errors led to the Warriors advantage. The Lakers would pull within four at 16-12 but got no closer.
Again Winona State would take a big lead early, jumping out 12-3 in the third set. The Warriors defense had three blocks during the run. Lake Superior State would work themselves back into the set, closing to within three at 17-14. Kills by
Sophie Wilker and
Danielle Rampart would give the Warriors breathing room at 19-14 before closing out the match with a 25-17 victory.
Taylor Goar finished the match with 12 kills while Rampart added 11 and hit .526.
Meghan Seymour had 17 assists and five digs.
Lauren Kudronowicz finished with five block assists.
In the second match of the day the Warriors combined to hit .315 with 44 kills in 92 attacks. Kudronowicz had 12 kills to lead the team. Fruechte added ten kills, ten assists and two service aces.
Winona State would go up 8-4 in the first set against West Virginia State. The Warriors would extend their lead to seven midway through the set before closing it out with a 25-17 win after a kill from
McKenna Larsen.
It was all Winona State in the second set and they took a double-digit lead at 16-5 after a WVS ball handling error. The Warriors had four aces in the second set on the way to a 25-13 win.
West Virginia State kept it closer in the third set but the Warriors stayed perfect in sets on the season. A 7-2 run midway through the set provided all the breathing room the Warriors would need.
Things could get a little tougher tomorrow as the Warriors will face Grand Valley State and #8 Ferris State before returning to Winona.
