WINONA, Minn. - The Warriors (4-3-1, 1-3-1 NSIC) are on the road after playing Wayne State to a 1-1 tie on Friday and suffering a 0-1 loss to Augustana on Sunday. The Warriors will look to back to their winning ways as they head north this weekend. The Warriors have not lost two consecutive conference games since September of 2015, losing to Augustana and St. Cloud State.
SENIOR STAR POWER: The Warriors have just two seniors on the 2016 squad but both are key contributors to the WSU team. Last season both
Kenzie Rose and
Meg Riebau were named to all-region teams.
FRESHMAN PHENOM, SOPHOMORE STAR: Last season the Warriors were led by freshman
Abby Bohanski, who scored 11 goals in her first year in a WSU kit. So far this season, Bohanski currently has a team high six goals.
IN THE NICK OF TIME: Winona State was down 1-2 at the 89th minute of last it's matchup against Ferris State. Goals from
Courtney Wiencek and
Abby Bohanski 38 seconds apart shut the door on Ferris State.
FINDING THEIR NET PRESENCE: This season the Warriors will look to get the ball in the back of the net more frequently than 2015. Last season they were held to just 24 goals, their lowest total since the program began in 1995. The NSIC has also grown in size and competitive since that time, which has played a factor in lower scoring performances.
VALKNER IN THE NET: Redshirt Freshman
Jourdan Valkner of Wayne, IL has been the starting goalkeeper for the Warriors since the Warriors' match against Ferris State. Valkner came in during the Warriors' match at Upper Iowa to relieve
Rachel Oleson, who had surrendered two goals in the first half of that game. Valkner is currently 2-1-1, allowing four goals and having 22 saves and one shutout.
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: Of the 14 goals the Warriors have scored this season, 12 of them have come in the second half and one in overtime.
LOOKING AHEAD: Next up the Warriors will host Sioux Falls and be on the road to place Southwest Minnesota State the weekend of October 7th.
