Late Surge Leads #20 Warriors Past Bulldogs

DULUTH, Minn. – Four Warriors scored in double figures to help the #20 Winona State (14-3, 9-2 NSIC) women's basketball team beat the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth (9-6, 7-4 NSIC) 70-60, on Friday night.

The first quarter started with a three-pointer from Liz Evenocheck but the Bulldogs answered with two layups and a three-pointer of their own to grab four-point lead. Neither team could create much separation from one another as the Warriors and Bulldogs scored 18 and 19 points respectively, in the first quarter.

Kayla Timmerman had seven of the Warriors' 17 points in the second quarter. The Warriors were able to build an eight-point lead about halfway through the quarter but the Bulldogs would cut that lead to 35-31 before halftime.

Timmerman again would get the scoring going for the Warriors coming out of the half by connecting on a jumper and then finishing a layup. The Warriors would extend their lead to eight, one more time before the Bulldogs would take the lead by connecting on a three-pointer with two and a half minutes left in the third quarter. The Bulldogs would then go on an 11-2 run to end the quarter with 53-48 lead over the Warriors.

After a layup from Hannah McGlone, the Warriors would go two and a half minutes without a score. The Warriors would regain the lead with another McGlone layup with 4:34 left to play. The Warriors created an 15-4 run to end the game, putting them past the Bulldogs 70-60.

The Warriors shot 49 percent from the field, 37 percent from behind the arc and made 13 of 17 free throws on the night. The Bulldogs shot 36 percent from the field, 32 percent from behind the arc, while making five of seven free throws.
