ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The #20 Winona State (15-3, 10-2 NSIC) women's basketball team had three players reach double figures on Saturday against St. Cloud State. Two of their three double-digit scorers recorded double-doubles as the Warriors escaped the pursuit of the Huskies (8-8, 6-6 NSIC), winning 71-64.
The Huskies started hot by sinking three-pointers on their first four consecutive possessions and jumping out to a 12-2 lead. The Warriors had a 6-0 run of their own, but still struggled offensively in the first quarter as they scored 13 points and trailed SCSU 20-13 at the end of ten minutes.
In the second quarter the Warriors grabbed the lead following a three-point play by
Jenny Weiland. The lead didn't last long as the Huskies knocked down another three-pointer to quickly regain a lead. It wouldn't be until just more than a minute before halftime that the Warriors would get their lead back and hold a two-point advantage at 37-35, going into halftime.
Coming out of halftime the Warriors saw their lead diminished by three of the Huskies' 12 three-pointers. The Warriors regained their advantage with four minutes left to play in the quarter, but the tireless Huskies would grab the lead again going into the fourth quarter with one-point, 53-52, advantage.
Gabie Doud would tie the score at 56 early in the fourth quarter with a layup. With just under five minutes to play,
Kayla Timmerman would hit a jumper to again tie up the score at 58. A three-pointer from
Tara Roelofs would put the Warriors on top with four minutes to play. The Warriors would extend their lead to 71-64 by the way of late free throws from Roelofs, Timmerman and Tuttle.
The Warriors shot a solid 50 percent from the field, while connecting on three of nine three-pointers and 14 of 19 free throws. The Huskies shot 32 percent from the field and made 12 of 30 three-pointers for 40 percent. The Huskies sank all six of their free throw attempts.
Tara Roelofs led the scoring with 19 points and dished out six assists.
Kayla Timmerman recorded her 3
rd double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Hannah McGlone also recorded a double-double, her 5
th of the season, with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

The Warriors return to McCown gym next weekend as they host Wayne State (13-4, 8-4 NSIC) Friday and Augustana (13-6, 8-4 NSIC) Saturday.
