WINONA, Minn. – Jenny Tuttle led the #17 Winona State (16-3, 11-2) women's basketball team with 15 points as the Warriors beat Wayne State (13-5, 8-5 NSIC) on Friday night in McCown. Including Tuttle, four Warriors scored in double figures to power the Warriors 21 past the Wildcats, 62-41.
In the first quarter, shooting 50 percent from the field, the Warriors were able to create a 16-6 margin.
Jenny Weiland and
Kayla Timmerman had seven and six points respectively.
The second quarter also went the way of the Warriors as they tacked on 24 points opposed to the Wildcats' 10. The Wildcats shot a mere 19 percent from the field.
Arika Wooldridge would connect on two free throws to make it a 40-16 game before the half. As a team, the Warriors shot a hot 59 percent from the field before heading to the locker rooms with a comfortable lead.
Coming out of halftime, the Wildcats were the hot team completing a three-point play and connecting on two quick three-pointers. The Wildcats outscored the Warriors 12 to 11 in the third quarter. The Wildcats were able to shrink the deficit the 16, but the Warriors would push that back to 23 heading into the final quarter.
In the final quarter, the Wildcats would again cut the deficit down to 15, but the Warriors' steady shooting from the field allowed them to keep their separation and gain another victory on their home court.
Jenny Tuttle led all scorers with 15 points. Following Tuttle was
Kayla Timmerman with 12 points,
Jenny Weiland with 11 points and ten
Tara Roelofs. Weiland led all Warriors with seven rebounds.
The Warriors shot 48 percent from the field and 45 percent from three-point range. The Warriors made all three opportunities from the free throw line. The Warriors held the Wildcats to 25 percent shooting on the night and 20 percent from three-point range. The Wildcats made five of eight free throws.
The Warriors are back in action in McCown Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. tip against Augustana (14-6, 9-4 NSIC).
