#14 Warriors Come Up Short In Sioux Falls Battle

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The #14 Winona State (13-3, 8-2 NSIC) women's basketball team fell 52-51 to Sioux Falls (12-2, 8-2 NSIC). The Warriors had created a one-point lead with two minutes left to play but were unable to complete the late rally from a nine-point deficit.
 
In the first quarter the Cougars would take the lead just two shots into the game with a three-pointer. The Cougars were able to gain an eight-point advantage with a minute left in the first quarter. Five quick points from Liz Evenocheck would cut that to three points 10 minutes into play in the half.
 
A layup from Hannah McGlone and two free throws from Kayla Schaefer would give the Warriors a one-point lead a few minutes into the second quarter. Kayla Timmerman would connect on a jumper to again tie the score, this time at 19, with five minutes left before halftime. The Cougars would regain the lead with a three-pointer a minute later and extend their lead to six points making it 31-25 by the end of the first half.
 
The Warriors were only able to get within three points of the lead early in the third quarter. The Cougars continued to build on their lead throughout the quarter to have a five-point advantage at 42-37, going into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter the Cougars gained a nine-point lead, their largest of the game, with five minutes left to play. Despite late three-pointers from Evenocheck and Roelofs, the Warriors could not regain the advantage.
 
Liz Evenocheck, Hannah McGlone and Gabie Doud all scored eight points. Tara Roelofs, Kayla Timmerman and Emily Wirth all scored seven points. On the glass Timmerman grabbed eight rebounds.
 
Quick Facts
  • No player from either team scored in double figures.
  • 51 points is the lowest amount of points by the Warriors since January 24th, 2015 in a 64-44 loss to Wayne State.
 
The Warriors will look to bounce back on the road as they travel to face Minnesota Duluth (9-5, 7-3 NSIC) and St. Cloud State (7-7, 5-5 NSIC) next weekend.
