Warriors come up short in weekend finale against Minot

WINONA, Minn. – Winona State's effort to leapfrog a pair teams in the NSIC resulted in a weekend split as Minot State University pulled away from the Warriors late on Sunday for a 4-1 road win.

WSU successfully knocked off U-Mary on Saturday, 2-1, on a last-second goal, but the Beavers of Minot put together a strong second half against to thwart the Warriors' upset bid.

Minot led by a 2-0 count after 20 minutes of the first half before Darian Molter netted her fourth goal of the season at the 24-minute mark. Chase Rehm's shot attempt was deflected in the box and Molter beat the goalie to the loose ball to cut the Warrior deficit in half.

The Beavers uncorked 11 shots, compared to just three for WSU in the first half, but only put four on target and carried a one-goal advantage into halftime.

The Warriors slowed down the Beaver offensive tempo in the second half and played in a deadlock until Minot broke the game open with a pair of goals with under 20 minutes left to play.

A Minot corner kick led to the first goal in the 71st minute and the Beavers put the game away with a four goal just four minutes later.

Minot owned a 17-6 shot advantage in the win. Five of Winona's six shots were on target though as Erin Rafferty earned the win in goal.

Rachel Oleson recorded four saves in the losing effort.

With two weeks remaining in the conference regular season, Winona (7-6-1, 6-4-1 NSIC) sits in seventh place. WSU is just one game back in the loss column from the three teams ahead.

Minot State improves to 9-4-1 (8-3) with the win.

The Warriors travel to Northern State University next Saturday for a 12 p.m. contest.
