SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – No. 17 Winona State definitively put a pair of disappointing losses from last week in the rear view mirror on Friday night with road sweep of No. 15 Augustana University.
The win gives the Warriors (15-7, 9-5 NSIC) a one-game cushion over the Vikings (17-7, 8-6 NSIC) in a crowded conference race.
WSU won in straight sets by scores of 25-16, 26-24, 25-20.
The Warriors fired on all cylinders in set one, committing just one attacking error compared to nine by the home team. A four-point game late turned into a decisive victory by the road team as Winona went on an 8-2 run to the finish line.
Winona arrived at set-point twice in the second game, but the Vikings battled back to tie things up at 24-all and extend the set to extra points. A pair of Augustana errors ultimately gave WSU the win and a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
The Warriors came out of the break with their best offensive performance of the night to the tune of a .333 attacking percentage and completed the sweep.
Winona's 62 digs were a season-high for a three-set match. Three players recorded double-digits in the category, led once again by freshman Becca Pagel. Danielle Rampart (16) and McKenna Larsen (13) contributed to the Warriors' outstanding back line defense.
Rampart and Lauren Kudronowicz recorded nine kills apiece. Kudronowicz had a team-high three blocks. Jordan Runge and Maria Wrage chipped in seven kills each. Runge also dropped in a pair of service aces on the night.
Winona concludes its weekend road trip with another ranked matchup at No. 20 Wayne State on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
