WINONA, Minn. – Winona State University swept its season series from Upper Iowa University on Saturday night in McCown Gymnasium, holding off the Peacocks for a 69-62 triumph.
Corey Jeffs registered his first double-double of the year, and second of his career, with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Warriors led by as many as 14 points in the second half and owned a 57-47 lead with 9:51 remaining in the contest before UIU went on a 10-2 run to make it a 59-55 game with 6:16 left on the clock.
The Peacocks cut their deficit to two at the 4:37 mark, and back to three with 1:35 remaining, but the Warriors found an answer each time to maintain their lead and hold onto victory.
Winona State only trailed for one possession, early in the first half, and carried a 41-28 advantage into halftime. Leading 24-21 at the 6:30 mark of the opening half, the Warriors exploded on a 17-2 run over the next six minutes of play.
WSU made the most of its second chances and Peacock miscues in the first half of action. The Warriors hauled in seven offensive rebounds in the first half, turning those into nine points, and forced 11 UIU turnovers which resulted in 11 WSU points.
The Warriors finished the game with 11 steals and a total of 17 points off 17 Peacock turnovers.
Caleb Wagner led all players with 20 points. He stuffed his stat sheet with seven rebounds and a career-best six steals. The sophomore is averaging 19 points per contest since being thrust into the starting lineup three games ago.
Jeffs scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half of Saturday's tilt.
Mason Domask chipped in 13 points while going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
Winona shot just 28 percent from three-point range, and 38 percent from the floor, but battled for a hard-earned conference win nonetheless.
WSU improves to 7-4 (3-3 NSIC) with its third straight victory, while Upper Iowa falls to 7-7 (1-5 NSIC).
The Warriors conclude their current five-game homestand with non-conference action against Michigan Tech on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
