Shooting woes sink Winona State on the road at Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Winona State University suffered its first conference loss of the season on Friday night at the University of Sioux Falls, 80-64.

The Warriors (4-2, 1-1 NSIC) shot a season-low 34 percent from the field to begin the weekend road trip. WSU has surrendered 49 second half points to its opponent in both losses this year.

While Winona struggled offensively over the final 20 minutes of the game, Sioux Falls shot 53 percent in the second half. The Cougars out-rebounded the Warriors, 44-32, on the night including a 25-11 advantage in the second half.

WSU lead by as many as seven points late in the first half before taking a 33-31 edge into the break. A three-pointer by Mason Domask early in the second half gave the Warriors a 39-33 advantage, before the home team went on a decisive run to take control of the contest.

USF scored six-unanswered points to knot the score at the 16:16 mark in the midst of a 24-5 run, and the Cougars led for double digits for the remainder of the game.

In addition to winning the battle of the boards, Sioux Falls dominated around the hoop offensively, outscoring Winona in the paint, 40-16.

Domask led the Warriors with a career-high 20 points in the loss. Tommy Gathje chipped on 14 points to go along with a team-best eight rebounds. Devin Whitelow led WSU with six assists.

The Cougars had four players reach double digits in scoring and halted the Warriors' run of three straight games of five players in double digits.

Winona State will seek a weekend split on Saturday against a tough Southwest Minnesota State team in Marshall. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
