Wagner’s career night lifts Warriors past Golden Bears, 77-59

WINONA, Minn. – Sophomore Caleb Wagner made the most of his first career start on Saturday night against Concordia-St. Paul, recording career-best in points (22) and assists (8) to lead Winona State University to a 77-59 win in McCown Gymnasium.

Wagner played in all but the waning seconds of the contest, starting in place of injured point guard Devin Whitelow, and has matched his point total from all of last season over the last two games.

Wagner scored the Warriors' first points of the ballgame, however it was the Golden Bears who led for much of the first half after that. Concordia took a 16-7 lead at the 13:11 mark of play as the WSU offense was cold in the early going.

Five straight points by Wagner cut the Winona deficit to 16-12 on a three-pointer midway through the half, but it wasn't until a trio of Warrior threes finally allowed the home team to take the lead in the final three minutes of the half.

Wagner hit again from downtown, and Charlie Koontz drilled the go-ahead three at the 2:51 mark, while Mason Domask followed it up with a basket from beyond the arc as well.

In total, Winona closed the first half on a 16-5 run with Wagner bookending his 12-point half with a layup before the buzzer.

The Warriors went 4-of-7 from long range in the second half and led by double digits for all but five possessions over the final 20 minutes of action.

Domask scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half for Winona.

Both teams committed 11 turnovers on the night with the Warriors cashing the Golden Bears' miscues into 16 points offensively.

Tommy Gathje and Wagner shared the rebounding lead with six apiece.

Corey Jeffs scored 11 points, and Koontz chipped in 10 off the Warrior bench.

Winona State snaps a three-game skid and improves to 5-4 (2-3 NSIC) while sending CSP to a record of 1-9 (0-4 NSIC).

The Warriors continue their current five-game homestand with a non-conference game on Tuesday against Waldorf University. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
