#23 Warriors Storm Back But Fall To Mavericks

WINONA, Minn. – On senior night the Warriors (20-6, 15-5 NSIC) rallied but weren't able to overcome the Mavericks on their home court as they fell 78-71 Saturday. It was chilly outside, but it was a heated night in McCown gym. Combined, the teams committed 45 fouls and shot 49 free throws.

The Mavericks' full-court press gave the Warriors trouble in the early minutes of the game. The Warriors would work to break the press better as time continued. Winona State opened the game making six of 11 shots including one three-pointer. Jenny Weiland scored a layup to tie it at 11 with two and a half minutes left in the quarter. The Mavericks would put together a quick 7-2 run to end the opening quarter ahead by five.

The Warriors shot 64 percent from the field to erase what was a 14-point deficit. The Mavericks scored 20 points in the second quarter while making four of seven from behind the arc. The Warriors added 24 to their total, with eight coming from Hannah McGlone, and entered halftime trailing by just one point, 38-37.

To start the second half the Mavericks shot 55 percent by making six of 11 shots. Hannah McGlone and Jenny Weiland both chipped in six points to move into double digits in scoring, helping the Warriors gain the lead. The lead would exchange hands before the Warriors grabbed a five-point lead headed to the final quarter.

In the final quarter the Warriors would build their lead out to eight points until the 2:38 mark when a pair of Maverick free throws tied things up at 68. The Warriors were never able to regain their advantage as the Mavericks connected on seven free throws in the final minutes to hang on and get the 78-71 win.

The Warriors shot 48 percent from the field and 40 percent from the three-point range. The Warriors made 15 of 24 free throw attempts.

The Mavericks shot 46 percent from the field and 37 percent from behind the arc. The Mavericks connected on 19 of 25 free throws.

Hannah McGlone led the Warriors with 16 points and Jenny Tuttle scored 14 points. Jenny Weiland and Liz Evenocheck scored 13 and 10 points, respectively.

The Warriors will play their last regular season games on the road next weekend at Augustana (20-6, 15-5 NSIC) and Wayne State (19-6, 14-6 NSIC).
