Augustana Hands Warriors' Tough Road Loss

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Winona State (20-7, 15-6 NSIC) women's basketball team dropped the first of their last two regular season road games on Friday. Augustana was able to best the Warriors 73-67 on Friday night.
 
The teams traded baskets to start the game as the lead changed six times in the first quarter. With three minutes left in the first period the Vikings created a little separation with a 20-15 lead to end the quarter.
 
In the second quarter the Warriors held a small lead until two minutes before the half when the Vikings tied the score at 30 with two free throws moments before taking the lead. Again, the Vikings were able to build on their lead as they went into half time up by seven, 39-32.
 
In the second half, the Vikings kept things rolling as they extended their lead to 17 mid-way through the third quarter. The Warriors, not backing down, cut the deficit to just five points with less than two minutes before the final quarter.
 
The Warriors kept the Vikings within reach going into the final minutes of the game as they pulled within five points of the lead with just two minutes to go. Tara Roelofs three-pointer shrank the deficit to four points with :46 seconds remaining. Free throws from Augustana put the game out of reach for the Warriors in the waning seconds as they fell 73-67.
 
Jenny Tuttle led the Warriors in scoring with 17 points. Tara Roelofs and Liz Evenocheck each added 11 points and Kayla Timmerman chipped 10 points.
 
The Warriors shot 46 percent from the field and 44 percent from three-point range. Augustana shot 38 percent from the field and 22 percent from behind the arc. The Vikings were helped out with 33 points from the bench as the Warriors only had 13.
 
The Warriors will play in their final regular season game Saturday afternoon as they face Wayne State (20-6, 15-6 NSIC) at 4p.m.
