ROCHESTER, Minn. – Winona State (1-1) split their season opening double-header with Grand View College (1-1) on Tuesday. The Warriors got three hits from
McKenna Larsen and
Allyson O'Herron on the day.
Jordyn Kleman earned her first win of her career in game two, pitching all seven innings and allowing just two runs.
GAME 1
Grand View got on the board early in the game, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first. A triple down the line in right got the scoring started for the Vikings. Another run would cross on a single to left field.
After the Warriors went down in the first inning, Grand View threatened to add to their lead in the second inning.
McKenna Larsen worked out of a two on, nobody out jam to keep the scored at 2-0. The Warriors would put runners on second and third in the bottom of the inning but a strikeout would end the scoring threat.
The Vikings would plate two more runners in the top of the third, extending their lead to four. Winona State threatened again in the fifth inning but stranded a pair of runners on base after the inning started with back-to-back walks.
The 4-0 Grand View lead would hold up as the Warriors went down quietly in the bottom of the seventh inning.
GAME 2
It would again be the Vikings who jumped ahead, doing so with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Both runs scored on singles down the line in right field. The Warriors would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning. O'Herron's single up the middle drove in
Samantha McLean for the Warriors first run in 2017.
After getting out of a little jam in the top of the third, Winona State would take a lead in the bottom of the inning. A walk and sacrifice bunt was followed by a double off the bat of
Paige Keegan, sending
Katelyn Kolb across the plate. Keegan would score herself when Larsen singled back up the middle.
Grand View threatened in the top of the fifth, putting runners on first and second with two outs. The threat was neutralized when
Jordyn Kleman struck out the cleanup hitter for the Vikings. In the bottom half of the inning, Keegan would again deliver for WSU; this time with a RBI triple to drive in
Jamee Schleis. Larsen followed by smacking a ball over the right fielder for a RBI double. The Warriors and Kleman would make the 5-2 lead hold up as the left Rochester with a split.
Winona State is back in action Friday as they take on Wisconsin-Parkside back in Rochester. The double header begins at 3 p.m.
