ROCHESTER, Minn. – Winona State's offense exploded early on Friday afternoon and it led to sweep of Wisconsin Parkside (0-6). The Warriors (3-1) took game one 11-1 before winning 10-0 in the second game. In the second game,
Jordyn Kleman struck out ten batters and recorded a no-hitter in the process.
GAME ONE
A two-out home run to left field put the Rangers on the board in the top of the first inning. Winona State quickly responded, loading the bases with nobody out in the bottom half of the inning. By the end of the inning ten Warriors would touch home on seven hits. The last time the Warriors scored ten runs in an inning was last April 21 against Augustana.
Katelyn Kolb would record a pair of hits before the first out of the inning was recorded.
During the first inning rally six Warriors would drive in runs. Larsen would drive in three runs alone in the inning.
Samantha McLean and
Shaye Witte each had two RBI's in the first. Also driving in a run during the inning was
Paige Keegan,
Lani Van Zyl and
Mariah Schultz.
McKenna Larsen worked out of jam in the top of the third, stranding runners on second and third. Winona State added a run in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to ten. McLean would drive in pinch runner
Megan McCabe in the inning.
Kolb, Larsen, McLean and Van Zyl all had two hits in the game for WSU. In the circle Larsen would allow seven hits and one earned run while striking out two batters. She would get four fly outs and nine ground outs in the game.
Every Warrior starter recorded a hit and scored a run in the game. In all ten different players scored a run for WSU.
GAME TWO
Kolb started the second game like she did the first, laying down a bunt right in front of home to get the inning started. Kolb would come home when McLean drew a bases loaded walk. By the end of the inning Winona State would score four runs thanks to another bases loaded walk and a two-run single to left by Van Zyl.
The Warriors would go back to work in the bottom of the second, collecting six runs on six hits and an error. Keegan, McLean, O'Herron, Van Zyl and Witte all had RBI hits in the six run sixth inning.
Kleman didn't need much help as she baffled the Ranger hitters, racking up ten strikeouts. The only time the Rangers threatened was when back-to-back runners reached base via the walk. Kleman would strikeout a batter to get out of the jam. Her no-hitter almost came to an end in the top of the seventh when a ground ball got through the right side of the infield. However, Shay Witte was all over the play in right and threw the runner out before she got to first base.
Next weekend the Warriors will travel to Illinois for five games over a three day stretch.
