ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Winona State (17-6) split their games on Saturday. The Warriors beat Washburn 3-1 before falling to Northeastern State 3-2.
GAME ONE vs Washburn
The Warriors scored three, fourth inning runs to take down Washburn 3-1. In the bottom of the fourth
Samantha McLean put the Warriors up 2-0 with a double, driving in
Lani Van Zyl and
McKenna Larsen. McLean scored to put the Warriors up 3-0 after a single from
Mariah Schultz.
Washburn cut the deficit to 3-1 in the sixth with a RBI double in the sixth. The rally ended with back-to-back ground outs and the Warriors held on for a 3-1 victory.
GAME TWO vs Northeastern State
Despite outhitting Northeastern State 6-3, Winona State fell 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. Late runs for the RiverHawks proved to be the difference.
Mariah Schultz' two-out homer to center field put the Warriors up 1-0 in the top of the second. A leadoff home run by Haley Acrey of the River Hawks tied the game at one in the bottom of the second.
Winona State would retake the lead in the top of the third, thanks to a RBI single off the bat of
Lani Van Zyl.
Katelyn Kolb, who reached via an error, scored on the single to left.
The Warriors would hold onto the lead until the bottom of the fifth. An error on a ground ball allowed the tying run to score with one out. After a fly ball out the River Hawks took a 3-2 lead on a single up the middle.
In the sixth and seventh innings the Warrior put a runner on base but could not get the hit to tie the game.
Jordyn Kleman struck out seven in six innings of work. Despite picking up the loss she allowed just one unearned run.
The trip to Missouri comes to a close tomorrow when the Warriors take on Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney.
