BOCA RATON, Fla. – Winona State raced back against #19 Lynn University but ultimately fell 10-9 in extra innings. After holding an early 3-0 lead the Warriors faced an 8-3 deficit after three. The Warriors would score six runs in the middle innings to grab a 9-8 lead before the host Fighting Knights found a way to score a run in both the bottom of the ninth and tenth to escape.
Joe Kubera led off the game with a solo homer to right field, putting the Warriors up one. Winona State scored twice more in the first.
Chad Herbst doubled in
Andrew Pliner and
Nathan Krause to make it 3-0. Lynn would get two of those runs back in the bottom of the first with back-to-back homers to right field. The Fighting Knights tied the contest in the second inning, scoring a run on a wild pitch.
Lynn took their first lead of the game in the third innings, scoring five runs on four hits. The scoring was bookended by homers to right field. In the middle of the homers were an RBI single, RBI double and sac fly.
The Warriors began their comeback in the fourth inning.
Jesus Cazares drew a bases loaded walk to make it 8-4. After a scoreless bottom of the inning, Winona State drew within one in the fifth, with three runs on four hits.
Sam Kohnle started the scoring by driving in Pliner with a single through the left side.
Treyton Larson drove in Herbst two batters later. Kohnle scored the third run of the inning, scoring on the throw down to second when Larson stole the base.
In the sixth inning, Winona State would overtake the Fighting Knights. A sac fly off the bat of Kohnle, Krause scored to tie the game. The next batter,
Derek Martin singled through the left side, driving in Pliner and putting WSU up 9-8.
The game would stay 9-8 until the bottom of the ninth. A one out error allowed Lynn to put a runner of first. After a wild pitch and ground out the Fighting Knights had a runner on third with two outs. A single up the middle tied the game at nine.
After a quiet top of the tenth, Lynn quickly got going in the bottom of the inning. A double to left started the inning. After a hit-by-pitch and bunt single, the bases were loaded with no outs. A single through the left side gave Lynn a 10-9 win.
Hayden Krimmer threw seven innings and struck out four. Tomorrow the Warriors take on Florida Tech at 2 p.m. in Melbourne, Fla.
