MANKATO, Minn. – Winona State (31-8, 12-2 NSIC) saw their 14 game winning streak snapped when they fell twice to #18 Minnesota State (34-6, 12-2 NSIC) on Tuesday. The Warriors dropped game one 1-0 before falling 5-2 in game two.
GAME ONE
Mavericks Win Pitching Dual, Stop Warriors Streak
Minnesota State scored an unearned run in the top of the first to take a one-run lead. Things could have gotten worse but
McKenna Larsen was able to strand three runs on base.
Paige Keegan singled through the left side to start the third inning. Keegan would advance to second but was stranded there at innings' end.
Mariah Schultz had a two out single in the fourth and finished the inning stuck on second. The Warriors would finish the game with two hits.
Larsen pitched well for the Warriors, allowing just six hits and stranding seven Mavericks.
GAME TWO
Big Inning Costs Warriors
Lani Van Zyl put the Warriors up 1-0 in the top of the first, driving in
McKenna Larsen with a triple to left center. The Warriors would leave a pair of runners on base but took the early lead. Winona State would leave a pair of runners on base in the second inning as well.
Winona State tried to extend their lead in the third, loading the bases with one out. With
Paige Keegan at the plate Larsen tried to score on a ground ball to short. She would be thrown out at home and WSU would leave the bases loaded a batter later. The Mavericks would make the Warriors pay in the bottom of third, exploding for five runs on five hits. After two quick outs MSU loaded the bases and hit a grand slam to take a 4-1 lead. Another run would come home on a double to put the Mavericks up four.
The Warriors would again load the bases in the fourth and once again stranded three on base. In the top of inning number five Winona State loaded the bases with nobody out. An error allowed
Shaye Witte to score from third. In between a pair of strikeouts Keegan was thrown out at the plate trying to score from third on a ground ball to second. WSU would leave the bases loaded for the third straight inning.
In the final two innings Winona State would get just one runner on base as they fell 5-2 to MSU. It was just the second time all season the Warriors have fell in a game when scoring first.
