MINOT, N.D. – Both games on Sunday were shutouts but Winona State (5-19, 5-9 NSIC) did come out on top in game one, winning 9-0 behind a five hit shutout from
Daniel Karlin-Kamin. In the second game the Warriors were held to three hits as they fell 6-0 to Minot State (14-7, 9-5 NSIC).
GAME ONE
Karlin-Kamin Shuts Out Beavers
Mitchell Heid gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the first, driving in
Treyton Larson with a double to right field.
Michael Hommes gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead in the second, after homering to right field, driving in
Chad Herbst in the process.
Minot State did have runners in the first five innings of play but could not get to Karlin-Kamin. Winona State busted the game open in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs on five hits. After a quick out, Heid started the rally with a single to left center. Following an error,
Sam Kohnle grounded out to short, driving in a run.
Nathan Krause drove in the second run of the inning with a single to center field. Hommes drove in Krause to keep the inning going. The final run of the inning scored when Larson drew a bases loaded walk.
The Warriors would add two more runs in the top of the seventh.
Chad Herbst scored on an error before
Taylor Field drove in the final run of the game with a single through the left side. Hommes scored the final WSU run, making the final score 9-0. The Beavers did not have a base runner reach in the final two innings of play.
GAME TWO
Beavers Silence Warrior Bats
The Winona State bats would not have the same success in the second game. Minot State scored two runs in the bottom of the first and did not let the Warriors counter.
The first base runner for the Warriors came in the third when Herbst singled up the middle. He would get to second but no further as the inning ended with a strikeout.
The Beavers would double their lead in the fourth, scoring two runs on three hits. Minot State made it 5-0 in the fifth as the Warriors searched for their second hit of the game.
The second hit for the Warriors came in the top of the eighth.
Kipp Youngquist singled to right field to lead off the inning. After a fielder's choice and a pop out, Hommes singled to right field, giving WSU a pair of runners. A ground out would end the threat and WSU was not able to get another scoring chance.
Minot State would tack on a run in the eighth to close out the 6-0 victory. On Wednesday, Winona State travels to Wayne State for a NSIC double header, starting at 1:30 p.m.
