ST. CLOUD, Minn. – In the first of two doubleheaders against St. Cloud State this weekend, Winona State (13-25, 13-15 NSIC) split the pair of games on Saturday. The Huskies (30-12, 21-9 NSIC) scored five first inning runs and took game one 8-3. The Warriors used three runs in the seventh to complete a late game come from behind win to take game two 7-5.
GAME ONE
Huskies First Inning Too Much For Warriors
Winona State got on the board early, scoring a run in the top of the first.
Joe Kubera drew a leadoff walk and came home to score on a single by
Jesus Cazares. The Huskies too got on the board in the first, scoring five runs in the bottom of frame one. They would add to their 5-1 lead in the second, scoring a run on a wild pitch.
The Warriors got back on the board in the fourth when Kubera drove in
Mitchell Heid with a single. WSU inched closer in the top of the fifth when
Nathan Krause was hit with the bases loaded, prompting
Treyton Larson to score. The Huskies would get the final run of the game, hitting a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth.
The Warriors finished with three runs on four hits in the seven inning contest.
GAME TWO
Warriors Rally, Holmstrom Delivers Strong Relief Effort
Kubera again scored the first run of the game, scoring on a passed ball in the top of the first. The Warriors doubled their lead in the second inning when Kubera singled, driving in
Kipp Youngquist.
A Warrior error in the bottom of the second allowed the inning to stay alive and helped the Huskies score two unearned runs to tie up the ballgame.
Youngquist gave the Warriors a lead in the third, driving in
Sam Kohnle with a single. The lead grew to two in the fourth inning when Larson scored on a Husky error. In the bottom of the fourth St. Cloud State rallied back, scoring two runs on a one out single. The Warriors would get out of the jam as Krimmer stranded a pair on base.
The Huskies took a lead in the sixth, scoring a run on a two-out double. Winona State would try to answer right back, loading the bases without getting a hit in the top of the seventh. The inning started with
Taylor Field reaching on a dropped third strike and then a walk and hit-by-pitch put WSU in business.
Derek Martin tied the game, picking up a RBI after drawing a walk.
Michael Hommes gave the Warriors a two run lead, driving in Heid and Youngquist with a single.
Parker Holmstrom was great in relief, allowing just one run and five hits in five innings for work. The Warriors had 13 hits in the second game. St. Cloud State had just one runner get into scoring position in the final three innings of the game.
