ABERDEEN, S.D. – Winona State (15-31, 15-21 NSIC) dropped their final two road games of the regular season on Sunday, falling 6-1 and 8-0 to Northern State (22-24, 15-19 NSIC). The Warriors are one of five teams with 15 wins in the NSIC and all five teams are battling for the final two spots in the Northern Sun Tournament. There are just four games remaining for Winona State, all at home against Concordia-St. Paul, one of those five-15 win teams.
GAME ONE
Warriors Can't Overcome Wolves Power
Northern State got a first inning grand slam by Schmidt to take a 4-0 lead. The Warriors had a runner reach third in the top of the third but could not get on the board. In the fourth WSU had a runner on first and second but again failed to get a run across the plate.
The Wolves added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth, hitting a two run homer and going up 6-0.
Chad Herbst got the Warriors on the board in the sixth, driving in
Jesus Cazares with a fly out to center field. Unfortunately the Warriors would get nothing more as the Wolves earned the 6-1 victory.
Sam Kohnle had two hits in the first game for the Warriors.
GAME TWO
Wolves Score Eight to Complete Sweep
Joe Kubera singled up the middle to start the game but the Warriors were unable to get on the board. Northern State struck first, scoring four runs on three-hits in the bottom of the third. The Wolves added to the lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth.
A pair of WSU batters reach base in the top of the sixth but a double play put the threat on ice. Northern State tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth. Winona State had four hits in the final three innings of play but the Wolves would take game two, 8-0.
Taylor Field and
Kipp Youngquist each had a pair of hits in game two.
The four game series with Concordia-St. Paul begins Friday at 1:30 p.m.
