Season Ends With Sweep of Golden Bears

WINONA, Minn. – The 2017 season came to an end on Saturday when Winona State (17-33, 17-23 CSP) took on Concordia St. Paul. The Warriors ended the season with a sweep, beating CSP 8-1 in game one and 10-6 in game two.
 
GAME ONE
Krimmer K's Eight in WSU Win
 
Joe Kubera led off the bottom of the first with a double to right center. He would come home on a single through the left side by Sam Kohnle. Kipp Youngquist doubled the lead with a single, driving in Jesus Cazares. Paul Mutch made it 3-0 with his single scoring Kohnle.
 
A wild pitch allowed the Warriors to increase their lead to 4-0 after two. Nathan Krause singled in the third, driving in Youngquist, giving WSU a 5-0 lead. Kohnle had a RBI single to left field, driving in Michael Hommes in the bottom of the fourth.
 
The Warriors scored in the fifth straight inning when they added two runs to their lead. Youngquist started the bottom of the fifth with a triple down the line in right field. Mutch hit the next ball to left, driving in Youngquist, putting WSU up seven. Mutch would later score on a wild pitch.
 
The Golden Bears finally got to starter Hayden Krimmer in the seventh, scoring a run. Krimmer allowed five hits and struck out eight.
 
GAME TWO
Warriors Win High Scoring Affair
 
Concordia started quickly, putting up three runs in the top of the first. The Warriors responded with a run in the bottom of the inning when Cazares drove in Treyton Larson. Winona State got another run back in the bottom of the second inning. Andrew Pliner singled up the middle driving in Taylor Field, cutting the deficit to one.
 
Back-to-back doubles by Larson and Cazares tied the game at three to start the third. Chad Herbst gave WSU a 4-3 lead, driving in Cazares with a single through the middle of the diamond. Pliner struck again for WSU, driving in Herbst with a double off the wall in right. Derek Martin kept the rally going, driving in Field.
 
The Warriors three-run lead was quickly erased in top of the fourth when a three-run double tied the game at six. The game did not stay tied long as the first four batters reached in the bottom of the fourth. Kohnle drove in Larson with a single to center field and WSU retook the lead 7-6. After a hit-by-pitch, back-to-back bases loaded walks of Field and Nick Nalewanski gave the Warriors a 9-6 lead.
 
Larson led off the fifth with a double, he later scored the Warriors tenth run of the game coming home as WSU had a runner caught stealing second. Joe Kubera would come into pitch in the fifth inning and held CSP down for the rest of the game. Kubera held the Golden Bears to just four hits and struck out eight to earn the save.
