WINONA, Minn. – Playing in front of their home crowd for the first time this season, No. 11 Winona State University put up a good fight again No. 2 Concordia University-St. Paul, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Bears escaped with a 3-1 win at McCown Gymnasium.
The tightly-contested match went in favor of CSP by scores of 25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 25-17.
Danielle Rampart, who was honored prior to the match for becoming the 12th Warrior in program history to eclipse 1,000 career kills, led WSU with 18 in the loss.
Concordia led by as much as a 21-16 count late in the opening set before the home team rallied. Winona went on a six-point run, capped on a service ace by McKenna Larsen, to take a brief 22-21 lead. WSU matched its season high of nine aces in the match.
The Golden Bears answered with a side out to tie the game, and proceeded to close out the set with a 4-1 run.
Rampart floored five kills in the second set, including a decisive swing on a side out with WSU trailing by one to tie the game at 19-19. That kill sent Winona on a 7-3 run and ended with a Jordan Runge kill to even the match at 1-1.
CSP (.417) and WSU (.361) each recorded their best attacking percentages of the night in the pivotal third set.
The back-and-forth match featured 13 ties and Winona's first deficit coming at the 18-17 mark. The Warriors, trailing 23-21, rallied for three straight points to take a one-point lead, but CSP notched the final two points to take a 2-1 match lead into the break.
The Golden Bears were finally able to separate themselves from the Warriors in the fourth set, leading wire-to-wire while WSU recorded its lowest hitting percentage of the match (.114).
Freshman Kate Masberg floored a season-high 13 kills in the Winona setback. Larsen followed that up with nine kills from her setter position to go along with 44 assists, four service aces and 11 digs.
The Warriors travel to Upper Iowa University on Tuesday, September 16 to continue NSIC action with a 6 p.m. match.
