IRVINE, Calif. – No. 5 Winona State University opened its 2017 volleyball campaign with a pair of sweeps at the Concordia-Irvine Labor Day Invitational on Friday.
The Warriors opened the day with a convincing 25-15, 25-16, 25-11 win against Cal State-Stanislaus. Later that night Winona earned a 25-17, 25-22, 25-22 win over McKendree University.
Danielle Rampart paced the Warriors with 10 kills against Cal State, and
Maria Fruechte led all players with 14 kills in the nightcap.
WSU hit over .300 in both matches. Defensively, the Warriors were equally impressive on opening day. Winona limited Cal State to a .043 hitting percentage and held McKendree to .138 clip. The Warriors recorded 51 total digs against McKendree, led by Fruechte (10) and
Becca Pagel (13).
McKenna Larsen combined on the day for 55 set assists, 21 digs, nine kills and five service aces.
Middle
Maria Wrage recorded five block assists and one solo block between the two matches. The Warriors had 11 total team blocks on the day.
Winona returns to action on Saturday for its final two matches in California. The Warriors take on tournament host, Concordia-Irvine at 2 p.m. followed by (RV) California Baptist at 7 p.m.
