WINONA, Minn. – Winona State University had its eight-game winning streak halted on Friday night as Minnesota Duluth handed the Warriors their first home loss of the season by a 67-58 final score.
In a tightly contested game throughout, WSU went just 3-of-12 from the field over the final six minutes of play as the Bulldogs rallied to upset the Warriors on their home court.
Hannah McGlone scored the first four Winona points of the fourth quarter to pad the Winona lead to 51-46, but that her layup at the 7:36 mark stood as WSU's final points for the next five minutes. Meanwhile, UMD went on a 12-0 run until Allie Pickrain final knocked down a three-pointer for the Warriors to cut the Bulldog deficit to 58-54.
The Bulldogs answered with a quick basket on the other end, and after a Winona miss, UMD tracked down a big offensive rebound on its ensuing possession and went on to ice the win at the free throw line.
Duluth out-rebounded Winona, 38-33, and pulled down 12 offensive rebounds which led to 14 second-chance points.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively in the ballgame, but UMD took a 14-13 edge after one quarter, despite shooting just 29 percent. WSU took a 28-26 lead into halftime and owned a 47-46 advantage after the third quarter in the competitive affair.
The Bulldogs shot 44 percent in the second half, compared to a 36 percent clip by the Warriors who struggled from the field for most of the night. WSU was outscored in each of the final two quarters for the first time all season as the Warriors went just 3-of-18 from beyond the arc in the loss.
McGlone tallied her sixth straight double-double, and 10th of the season, leading Winona with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
Pickrain chipped in 11 points in her return to the starting lineup, while Kayla Schaefer added 10 points in the setback.
Winona State falls to 13-2 (9-2 NSIC) with the loss, and UMD improves to 10-4 (7-3 NSIC).
The Warriors look to begin a new winning streak on Saturday when they host St. Cloud State at 4 p.m.
