WAYNE, Neb. – Winona State University led by as many as 12 in the second half, and had its chances late to secure a win, but Wayne State battled back for a 69-67 win on its home court over the Warriors on Friday night.
The loss snapped the Warriors' four-game win streak.
After a tightly contested first half, Winona carried a 34-31 advantage into the break. The Warriors went 7-of-12 from three-point range in the opening half as five different players connected from downtown led by a pair of deep buckets by Corey Jeffs and Caleb Wagner.
WSU came out of the break on a 14-5 run capped on a three-pointer by Jeffs. The seniors' basket came the Warriors a 48-36 lead, with the 12-point edge standing as the largest by either side of the night.
The Wildcats answered with an eight-point run as Winona went on a five-minute scoreless drought to make it a 48-44 contest. A three-pointer by Wayne's Kendall Jacks came the home team its first lead of the second half and a back-and-forth finish ensued.
A three-pointer by Connor Flack, and a pair of free throws by Wagner, staked the Warriors to a 64-59 lead with 2:33 left to play, but the Wildcats proceeded to outscore Winona 10-3 for the remainder of the game.
After Wayne scored four points to make it a one-point contest, Wagner was fouled on a drive to the lane with 51 seconds left on the clock. A missed free throw went the Warriors' way, going out of bounds off the Wildcats, but Winona couldn't cash in on its second chance.
Jordan Cornelius answered with the game-winning three-pointer on the ensuing possession, and Wayne iced the game at the free throw line.
Winona State falls to 12-7 (7-6 NSIC) with the loss and Wayne State improves to 11-10 (6-7 NSIC).
The Warriors look to begin another winning streak on Saturday at Augustana University. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
