SIOUX FALLS, S.D.. – Winona State and Augustana shifted away from a defensive battle in the first half to an offensive shootout on Saturday night as the Warriors pulled away from the Vikings for a road win, 84-80.
Winona State knocked down at least 15 three-pointers for the fourth time this season and shot 60 percent from beyond the arc in the second half.
Tommy Gathje led the Warriors with 21 points, including 17 in the second half on 4-of-6 shooting from downtown.
The teams combined for 50 points in the first half before the offenses hit their stride for 114 total points between the two in the second half of play.
WSU pulled out to a 16-6 lead on a three-pointer by Devin Whitelow midway through the first half before the Vikings answered with a 20-8 run into the break and took a 26-24 advantage into halftime.
The second half featured several extended runs as each side shot over 50 percent over the final 20 minutes. The Warriors missed just 11 of their 31 shots in the second half as WSU exploded for 60 points.
The Warriors and Vikings traded leads nine times in the second half with the home team leading by as many as many as eight points early in the half. Augustana led pulled ahead 71-66 at the 4:21 mark before Winona made its final run to the finish line.
Gathje's three-pointer with 3:24 left on the clock made it a 73-72 game and Mason Domask's layup after a Viking turnover gave Winona the lead for good, 74-73.
Caleb Wagner got to the free throw line 11 times in the game and score 17 points, notching his third double-double of the season with 10 assists.
WSU has shot 30 or more three-pointers three times this season and are 3-0 in those contests.
The Warriors have won eight of their last 12 games and improve to 13-7 (8-6 NSIC).
Winona State returns to the road next weekend at Minot State and U-Mary.
