Bohanski's milestone goal extends Warriors' win streak

WINONA, Minn. – Winona State University senior Abby Bohanski sniped the game-winning goal late in the second half on Friday night as the Warriors were a 1-0 winner over Minnesota Duluth at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.

Bohanski's goal moved her into a 10th-place time in program history with her 29th career goal. The forward also moved into a tie for fifth all-time in game-winning goals (11) and T-11 in points (74).

Winona State (5-5-1, 5-4-1 NSIC) picked up a pivotal win over Minnesota Duluth (5-7-1, 4-5-1 NSIC) in the conference standings with the triumph.

Freshman goalkeeper Yanel Ortiz backed up her first career start with another solid performance in net, earning her second straight shutout victory and making double digit saves (11).

Winona State and UMD played a physical, but clean first half. Georgette Topalis tried to put the Warriors up early with a header attempt but the Bulldog goalkeeper, Carlye Wright got her mitts on it.

UMD (9) held a slim shot lead on WSU (7) heading into halftime, but the Warriors didn't let that phase them.

As they have all season, the Warriors came out of halftime with an extra sense of urgency. WSU penetrated the Bulldog defense and rattled off an additional seven shots in the second half bringing their nightly total to 14.

Just before the final buzzer sounded, Bohanski was able to dribble to open space right in front of the net and curve one over the Bulldogs' goalkeeper for her second goal of the season giving WSU the victory.

Ortiz improved to 2-0 in her young career as keeper.

Winona State is back in action on Sunday as the Warriors host St. Cloud State at 1 p.m. from Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.
