ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State University turned in an impressive defensive performance on Saturday afternoon on its way to a straight set sweep of Winona State University. The Huskies recorded a staggering 75 digs in just three sets while handing the Warriors' their fourth straight loss.
The current losing streak now stands Winona's longest since 2015 and drops the Warriors' record to 9-13 (6-8 NSIC). The Huskies improve to 12-8 (8-6 NSIC) while denying WSU's attempt at moving up the conference standings as the teams enter the final few weeks of the regular season.
After being swept in back-to-back matches entering the day at St. Cloud, the Warriors looked to bounce back in set one of the pivotal conference matchup. Winona State made a big push late in the first set and looked poised to take the win on the Huskies' court, but the home team rallied and came away with a 26-24 win.
St. Cloud went on to claim the final two sets by matching scores of 25-22 in each win.
Winona State out-hit the Huskies, .221 to .201, in the setback as the St. Cloud defense proved to be the difference. Clara Krenz led the way with 34 digs. The Huskies also dropped six aces compared to just one by the Warriors.
Senior Maria Wrage paced WSU, matching her season high with 10 kills while hitting .444. Taylor Goar and Bre Maloney had seven kills apiece in the loss. Maloney set the offense with 30 assists.
Winona State will look to snap its current skid at home next weekend with a pair of matches in McCown Gymnasium. The Warriors host Minnesota Crookston on Friday and Bemidji State on Saturday in Winona.
