Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Vikings shoot past Warriors, 86-84

WINONA, Minn. – Winona State University suffered its second straight home loss on Friday night in McCown Gymnasium to Augustana University. The Vikings shot 59 percent from downtown in the second half to hand the Warriors an 86-84 setback.

WSU entered Friday's tilt looking to sweep the season series from Augustana. The Warriors had won 10 of their last 12 games until the Vikings disrupted their stretch as the hottest team in the NSIC.

Winona State led by as many as 12 points in the first half and carried a 45-37 advantage into the break. The Warriors connected on over 50 percent of their shots in the opening half and went 7-for-15 from beyond the arc, while Augustana was just 4-for-15 from three-point land to begin the game.

The roles were reversed in the second half as the Vikings went 7-for-12 from long range and the Warriors went cold at a 4-for-16 clip.

After trading baskets on their first possessions of the second half, the Vikings embarked on a 12-0 run to take the lead at the 15:11 mark. Augustana never led by more than six points in the minutes that followed, and a layup by Devin Whitelow with 4:39 left to play finally put the Warriors back in front, 74-73. Augustana would not be denied though as the Vikings answered on virtually every possession, and the Winona defense failed to make the crucial stop.

Spencer Jordan went 3-for-3 from downtown for Augustana over the final three minutes of the game, once giving the Vikings the lead back, 78-77, with 2:52 on the clock, and twice stretching the lead back to two possessions.

Kevion Taylor knocked down a three-point bucket with 33 seconds left to cut the Warrior deficit to 86-84, and a Vikings turnover game Winona the ball back with six seconds to go. Taylor then got a good look at the potential game-winning shot from beyond the arc, but the attempt hit off the back iron as time expired.

Taylor led the Warriors with 18 points and six rebounds. Corey Jeffs chipped in 13 points while Caleb Wagner totaled 11 to go along with seven assists.

Friday marked the first time in five games that WSU lost when hoisting at least 30 three-point shots (11-31).

Winona State falls to 18-9 (13-8 NSIC) with the loss, and Augustana improves to 15-12 (10-11 NSIC).

The regular season concludes on Saturday with Senior Night schedule for the Warriors and a 6 p.m. tip against Wayne State.
