Warriors drop finale at Central Missouri, 4-2

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – After a pair of lopsided defeats on Saturday, Winona State University hung with Central Missouri on Sunday afternoon, but the Mules prevailed in the series finale to complete the sweep of the Warriors, 4-2.

Winona's eight hits in the final game were their most in the three-game series.

The Warriors made it three straight games of plating the first run on Sunday as Kipp Youngquist sparked a two-out rally in the top of the second inning with a double down the left field line. Nick Nalewanski followed with an RBI-single to drive home Youngquist and give WSU an early 1-0 lead.

Central Missouri wasted little time answering back, plating three runs to take the lead in the bottom of the frame. The Mules scattered four hits and were aided by a Winona error in the inning which led to one unearned run.

The Warriors played small ball in the third inning with Zac Stange dropping down a bunt for a single to lead off the third inning. Sam Kohnle and Taylor Field recorded back-to-back singles with one out with the latter driving in Stange to make it a 3-2 ballgame.

Three scoreless innings followed. The Warriors threatened twice, but left a total of three men on base in the fourth through sixth innings.

In the top of the seventh, Winona State again had a chance to plate the tying run, putting runners on the corners with two outs, but Chad Herbst went down on strikes to end the threat. In the bottom half of the inning, UCM's Cole Taylor drove a 1-0 pitch to right center for a leadoff triple and later scored to cement the Mules' 4-2 victory.

Youngquist led the Warriors at the plate going 2-for-4 on the day with two doubles and a run scored.

Aaron Mutter pitched well for the Warriors, but was charged with the loss. The sophomore surrendered four runs (three earned) on nine hits over 6.0 IP.

Parker Holmstrom tossed two scoreless innings in relief on the mound.

Winona State returns to the diamond in two weeks for four games in Springfield, Missouri scheduled for March 2-4.
