ROSEMONT, Ill. – No. 19 Winona State University split its first two games of the Lewis Dome Invitational on Friday by identical 7-0 scores. The Warriors were blanked in the opener by Grand Valley State University in the afternoon before handing No. 15 Wayne State University a 7-0 defeat.
The Warriors' lone hit in the ballgame against Grand Valley came in their last at-bat in the seventh frame off the bat of Lani Van Zyl.
Grand Valley plated three runs in the first inning alone in an uncharacteristically rough outing for Winona's McKenna Larsen. The senior surrendered a career-high seven runs (five earned) on seven hits over 3.0 IP.
Katie Schlegel completed the game in the circle and held Grand View to just one hit over 3.0 IP.
After suffering the loss in game one, it was Larsen who led the offensive charge against Wayne State. Proving her versatility, Larsen went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBI. Her RBI-double in the second inning broke the scoring seal on the contest, and she added a run-scoring single in the fifth.
Van Zyl and Samantha McLean each contributed RBI-singles, and Rylee Stout drilled her second homer of the season in the fifth frame – a three-run shot to account for the 7-0 victory.
Alison Nowak went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored for Winona.
In the circle, Jordyn Kleman improved to 2-0 on the year. The sophomore tossed her second complete game shutout while scattering six hits and striking out two batters.
The Warriors (4-2) continue play at the tournament on Saturday afternoon with games against William Jewell College and Missouri S&T.
