No. 16 Northern State shoots past Winona State

WINONA, Minn. – Winona State University had its nine-game home winning streak snapped Saturday night in McCown Gymnasium by No. 16 Northern State University, 82-64.

The Wolves showcased their NSIC-leading shooting ability in the first half, shooting 51 percent from the field, including an 8-for-14 effort from downtown, to carry a 46-28 advantage into the break. Northern finished the game shooting 48 percent with a 47 percent clip from beyond the arc.

On the flip side, Winona State struggled from three-point land all night. The Warriors began the game missing their first six attempts from downtown, and shot just 1-for-10 from deep in the first half. WSU ended the game going 6-for-26 from beyond the arc.

Caleb Wagner led all players for the second straight night with 17 points. The sophomore guard is averaging over 17 points over his last five games. Corey Jeffs added 14 points, but they stood as the only two Warriors in double digits on the night. Jeffs led WSU with eight rebounds.

The Wolves had four players with at least 10 points, led by Cole Dahl who went 4-for-6 from downtown and scored 15.

Northern led wire-to-wire and owned a double-digit edge for the entire second half. A three-point play by Jeffs early in the second half made it a 47-34 contest, but the 13-point deficit at the 17:57 mark was the Wolves' smallest lead of the second half.

Winona drops to 16-8 (11-7 NSIC) with the end of its four-game winning streak while Northern improves to 23-3 (16-2 NSIC).

The Warriors are back on the road next weekend for games at Concordia and Mankato.
