Winona State women go cold in St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Winona State University dropped its ninth straight decision on Friday night to open the final regular season road trip with a 59-49 loss at Concordia-St. Paul.

Coming off a pair of solid shooting performances in close loses last weekend against the two top teams in the NSIC North, the Warriors had reason to be optimistic in their chances of sweeping the season series from the Golden Bears. However, those hopes were dashed as the Golden Bears held Winona State to 33 percent shooting on the night.

The Warriors managed to hold Concordia under its season scoring average, but Friday marked the sixth time the Warriors shot below 40 percent during their current nine-game skid.

CSP never trailed in the contest, and controlled the momentum for most of the first half. A layup by Julia Silloway layup followed by a pair of free throws by Gabbie Doud early in the second quarter cut the Golden Bears' lead to 21-15, but stood as the only time the home team didn't own a double-digit advantage for the remainder of the period. Concordia went on to take a 33-22 lead into halftime.

After the break, WSU successfully changed its defensive approach, holding the Golden Bears to just eight points in the third quarter. Meanwhile, the Warrior offense found its footing and went on an 11-0 run out of halftime to knot the score at 33-33 on a layup by Allie Pickrain.

The Winona spurt forced a CSP timeout in which the Bears closed the quarter on an eight-point run of their own to regain control of the game.

Trailing by 11 with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Alyssa Jurges nailed a three-pointer and Hannah McGlone's jumper in the lane made it a 50-44 affair with 2:31 left on the clock. The Golden Bears answered with a three-pointer on the other end and proceeded to seal the win at the free throw line.

McGlone led the Warriors with 12 points while pulling down 13 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the year. The senior is now just seven points shy of 1,000 for her career.

Gabie Doud chipped in 10 points as the only other Warrior in double digits in the scoring column.

Winona State falls below .500 in conference play for the first time this season (9-10 NSIC) and to 13-10 overall. CSP improves to 8-17 (5-14 NSIC) while splitting the season series with WSU.

The Warriors will have another chance at a series sweep Saturday afternoon as they travel to Mankato for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
