SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Winona State University was unable to hold onto a 5-2 lead Sunday afternoon in the final game of a four-game road trip as Rogers State University rallied for a 6-5 win over the Warriors.
Winona State defeated Rogers State on Friday, 6-3, but dropped a pair of one-run games to close out the trip.
Freshman Zac Stange extended his hitting streak to six games with an RBI-single in the top of the first inning to give the Warriors an early lead. The Hillcats answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, but the Winona offense continued to click in the early innings.
Taylor Field led off the second inning with a single, and walks to Mitchell Heid and Derek Martin loaded the bases. A one-out bases-loaded walk to Tanner Williams pushed across the tying run and Andrew Pliner's sac fly gave the Warriors a 3-2 lead.
Pliner drove in another run in the fourth frame and Sam Kohnle's RBI-single later in the inning stretched the Winona lead to 5-2. Rogers State chipped away at its deficit with a run in the bottom of the fourth before taking the lead for good in the sixth inning.
The Hillcats plated the tying and go-ahead runs with two out off Warrior starter Caleb Schoenholz. The sophomore left-hander allowed six runs (five earned) on 12 hits over 5.2 IP.
Jacob Watzka and Tanner Haessly each made scoreless relief appearances out of the Warrior bullpen.
Field and Kohnle each went 2-for-4 at the plate in the loss.
Winona State (1-6) travels to Augustana University for a three-game series in non-conference action next weekend.
