WINONA, Minn. – Taylor Goar and Cori Meyers floored 15 kills apiece Friday night in McCown Gymnasium as Winona State University toppled Augustana University in four sets for the Warriors' first home triumph of the season.
WSU improves to 5-9 (2-4 NSIC) while Augie is still winless in conference action (5-9, 0-6 NSIC). Winona State won by set scores of 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18.
The veteran and rookie combo of Goar and Meyers paced the Warrior offense to a .195 hitting percentage while the Vikings were held to a .097 clip. Goar posted her second straight double-double (15 digs) as her resurgent senior campaign continues.
The Warriors committed nine attacking errors in both the first and second sets, but combined for just seven over the final two games as the offense was clicking behind Bre Maloney's 48 assists. The sophomore also recorded a double-double (14 digs); her seventh of the year.
With the match tied at one set apiece, Goar drilled six kills in set three, including the final three points for WSU. Fittingly, she also sent the final point of the match to the floor in set four.
The Warriors got contributions up and down the lineup with five players totaling double figures in digs. Becca Pagel led the way with 20. The defensive approach continued at the net as well with Winona State matching its season high of 12 blocks. Freshman Madison Rizner and senior Sophie Wilker recorded five blocks apiece, while Goar added four of her own.
Winona State returns to action on Saturday afternoon, seeking its second victory against a ranked foe this season. The Warriors host No. 18 Wayne State at 4 p.m.
