WAYNE, Neb. – Winona State University came up just one goal short of gaining points in the tightly-contested NSIC postseason hunt, falling to Wayne State College on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 2-1. Senior Macy Miller scored her first collegiate goal, but it wasn't enough to salvage the finale of the Warriors' weekend road trip.
Winona State falls to 4-7 (3-5 NSIC) after a pair of losses on the road, and Wayne State improves to 4-7 (3-5 NSIC). The Wildcats have won three straight while WSU saw its two-game winning streak halted this weekend.
The Wildcats put a lot of pressure on Warrior goalkeeper Yanel Ortiz in the first half, forcing her to make two key saves as they outshot the Warriors in the opening period, 9-4. The home team finally broke through the Warrior back line and found the back of the net in the 23rd minute for the early lead.
The Warriors went on the offensive front to start the second half, as senior Courtney Wiencek got off two quality shots that were saved by the Wildcat keeper. Winona State went on to break the scoring seal and knot the score at one apiece in the 63rd minute when Miller uncorked the game-tying goal.
The Warrior momentum was quickly snuffed out, however, as the Wildcats went back in front on the scoreboard just one minute later for the decisive 2-1 lead.
WSU had some offense chances in the waning minutes of the contest, including back-to-back corner gifts, but the Warriors were unable to convert and ultimately suffered the close loss.
Wiencek led the Warriors in shots (3) and tied with Miller for the lead in shots on goal (2). Ortiz recorded three saves in net on five shots.
The back-and-forth match was also a physical one as Wayne State committed 15 fouls compared to nine for Winona State.
The Warriors will look to get back in the win column next weekend when they return to the road to face a struggling Minnesota Duluth team on Friday and travel to St. Cloud State on Sunday.
