Warriors’ season ends in overtime heartbreaker against Peacocks

WINONA, Minn. – Winona State University celebrated Senior Night prior to kickoff of Friday's regular season finale at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium. The Warriors had also hoped to celebrate a playoff berth after the contest, but those plans were spoiled as the Upper Iowa Peacocks put an end to Winona State's season with a 1-0 decision in overtime.

Despite the result, the Warriors left it all on the field, and looked poised for a big night after firing a number of scoring shots early in the game. Senior Alyssa Reynolds and freshman Jaida Wiege both uncorked good attempts early but each were met by the Peacock goalkeeper.

The Warriors' defense had to work all game, as Upper Iowa's Facie Graham was running at the outside backs and causing havoc. Her movement gave the Peacocks a 9-5 halftime lead in shots, but some solid goalkeeping by sophomore Yanel Ortiz kept the game scoreless going into the break.

With their season hanging in the balance, the Warriors managed to outshoot Upper Iowa in the second half, 11-8, but just as was the case in the first half, the home team failed to find the back of the net.

Junior Missy Greco had the best opportunity of the half in the 78th minute, but her shot from 18 yards out hit the crossbar and bounced into the goalie's hands. Wiege also had a shot go just wide in the final two minutes of regulation and the game remained scoreless heading to overtime.

The Peacocks controlled the brief overtime period and ultimately came away with the victory. Upper Iowa was denied a goal when Ortiz made an incredible save off a corner kick, but not 30 seconds later the Peacocks struck, as Aimee Sies sent one straight into the net off a corner kick.

Upper Iowa edged Winona State in total shots, 19-16, while both sides put nine shots on target. Corner kicks were the difference, as Upper Iowa earned seven, compared to the Warriors' two.

Wiege paced WSU in shots (6) and landed two on frame as did senior Courtney Wiencek. The rookie led the Warriors this season in shots (57) and shots on goal (24). Ortiz nabbed eight saves in goal for Winona State. Ortiz's 97 saves on the year are tied for the second-most in the last eight seasons.

Winona State's season comes to an end with a record of 7-11 (6-9 NSIC).
