Warriors drop road trip finale at Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Winona State University suffered its third straight loss on Tuesday afternoon as the Warriors concluded their spring break trip with an 8-2 setback at Florida Tech. The Warriors (6-5) split their six-game trip to Florida and will now turn their attention to conference play.

Florida Tech improves to 13-7 with its eighth straight win.

Tuesday's ballgame opened with three scoreless frames before the Warriors got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the fourth. Florida Tech committed three errors on its home field while WSU played flawless defense over nine innings.

Two of those Panther errors occurred in the fourth inning as Sam Kohnle reached on the first Tech miscue of the day with one out. Austin Savary followed with a single to left and Andrew Pliner singled to right field to load the bases. Kohnle came around to score on another Tech error for the first run of the game.

Kohnle went 2-for-4 with a double at the plate.

On the mound for Winona State, senior Brett Herber blanked the Panthers for four innings. The right-hander scattered five hits over the first four innings before Tech peppered the veteran for six hits and four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.

Jacob Watzka took over on the hill for Herber in the sixth frame but suffered the same fate, as he too was tagged with four runs as the Panthers stretched their advantage to 8-1.

Pliner collected his second hit of the day in the top of the seventh and came around to score on an RBI-single by Chad Herbst to account for the final run of the ballgame.

Parker Holmstrom tossed a scoreless seventh inning on the mound for WSU and Nicolas Herold recorded his fifth straight scoreless appearance in the eighth.

Catcher Nick Nalewanski reached base safely with a walk in the tilt but saw his seven-game hitting streak come to an end in the loss.
