BETTENDORF, Iowa – Caleb Schoenholz and Dillon Whittaker each pitched complete game gems Saturday afternoon as Winona State University sweep its doubleheader against Northern State University to claim the NSIC series win on the first weekend of conference play.
A day after falling in a 14-12 slugfest, Schoenholz shut out the Wolves in Saturday's opener, 2-0, and the Warrior bats backed Whittaker in a victorious 12-2 finale.
Sam Kohnle went 4-for-6 in the twinbill and drove in the first run of the day in the third inning of game one to stake Schoenholz to a 1-0 lead. Andrew Pliner tacked on an RBI-double as isurane in the bottom of the sixth, but the junior southpaw was already on cruise control against the Wolves.
Schoenholz (2-0) scattered five hits over 7.0 IP in his first complete game shutout of the year.
Northern State's Chad Hinkle accounted for both the Wolves' runs in the finale with solo homers in the second and fifth frames. Whittaker (2-2) was nearly untouchable for the remainder of the outing as the sophomore right-hander allowed five hits over 7.0 IP while striking out seven batters and walking just one.
A two-run double by Derek Baumgartner wiped away Northern State's 1-0 lead and put WSU in front for the duration of the ballgame. The Warriors plated two more runs to take a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning before breaking out for six runs in the fourth.
Kohnle opened the floodgates with a two-run double ahead of RBI-singles by Austin Savary and Chad Herbst. Derek Martin's two-run single capped the frame to make it a 10-1 affair.
After Hinkle launched his second long ball of the tilt, Justin Firpo chipped in an RBI-double in the bottom of the fifth and Martin ensured the run-ruled victory with an RBI-single in the sixth.
Winona State improves to 8-6 (2-1 NSIC) while Northern State falls to 6-8 (1-2 NSIC) after play on Saturday.
The Warriors return to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader scheduled against No. 7 St. Cloud State. An announcement is expected to be made on Monday regarding the relocation of those ballgames as Winona's field remains unplayable.
