MARSHALL, Minn. – Winona State University owned the three-point line on Southwest Minnesota State's home court Friday night and outlasted the Mustangs, 63-55, for the Warriors' fourth straight victory.
The contest was a two-possession game at most for the duration of the second half leading up to a Mustang bucket that cut the Warrior lead to 51-50. Caleb Wagner came up huge with a three-pointer on WSU's next possession to pad the lead with 3:12 remaining in the tilt. Wagner also produced a driving layup on the Warriors' next possession before a triple by Kevion Taylor sealed the deal with 1:10 left to play and the WSU lead at 59-52.
Taylor scored a game-high 27 for the victorious Warriors as the junior has registered at least 20 points in seven of his last eight outings. Wagner added 14 points and five rebounds while leading the way with four assists. Luke Martens chipped in eight points off the WSU bench while Keiron Goodwin tallied a season-best eight points in nine minutes.
Collectively, Winona State shot 50 percent (11-22) from beyond the arc while holding SMSU to a 17 percent clip (3-17). The Warriors also held the edge at the free throw line where they made 14 of their 23 attempts compared to just 13 chances at the stripe for the Mustangs.
The first half was highlighted by Winona State digging itself out of a 10-point hole with 8:00 left in the frame on back-to-back three-pointers by Taylor that saw the Warriors' eventually take a 29-28 edge into the break. Taylor hit a trio of triples over the final eight minutes of the half, including the game-tying bucket with 2:32 left before halftime.
Winona State improves to 11-8 (8-5 NSIC) while sending SMSU to a record of 6-13 (3-10 NSIC).
The Warriors will look to set a new season high with a five-game winning streak if they can knock off Sioux Falls on Saturday night. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D.
