MARHSALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State had Winona State University on the ropes at halftime on Friday night. The Mustangs led the Warriors, 36-28 at the break, only to see the Warriors put up 29 points in the third quarter on their way to a 74-58 triumph.
Following its offensive explosion in the third frame, Winona State capped its comeback by holding SMSU to eight points in the fourth quarter.
WSU improves to 13-4 (9-4 NSIC) with its third straight victory while snapping SMSU's three-game win streak and sending the Mustangs to a record of 9-9 (4-9 NSIC). The Warriors have now won 11 straight over the Mustangs.
Winona State shot a scorching 69 percent (11-16) from the field in the third quarter, and proceeded to hold SMSU to a 23 percent clip (3-13) in the fourth.
Emma Fee scored 12 of her 23 point in the third quarter as WSU was on the winning end of the ballgame summed up in the tale of two halves.
Taylor Hustad again dominated the paint with Fee, recording her ninth double-double of the year with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Sydney Lodermeier shot the ball extremely well from downtown (4-5) and finished the game with 12 points while Allie Pickrain added 10 points and five assists.
Emily Kieck dished out four assists in her third straight game without committing a turnover. Since being charged with eight turnovers on January 11th, Kieck has totaled 21 assists and zero miscues over her last three tilts.
The Warriors now turn their attention to the NSIC South-leading Sioux Falls Cougars on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D.
