SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – In a battle between the two top teams in the NSIC South, Winona State University prevailed on the road over the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday evening in a one-possession game, 78-76. Emma Fee and Taylor Hustad combined for 42 points in the post for the Warriors.
Winona State (14-4, 10-4 NSIC) successfully snapped Sioux Falls' (18-3, 11-3 NSIC) nine-game winning streak while handing the Cougars just their third home loss of the season. The two teams will match up once more on February 14th in Winona with the NSIC South title potentially on the line.
Saturday's matchup was anyone's game as the sides traded the lead eight times and were tied atop the scoreboard on eight other occasions. WSU owned an eight-point lead midway through the third quarter, but it was no more than a two-possession affair for the entirety of the contest outside of that. The Warriors did lead wire-to-wire in the fourth frame with the Cougars constantly nipping at their heels.
The difference in the tilt was Winona State's ability to get to the free throw line where the Warriors went 21-26 compared to an 11-15 mark by the home team.
The teams were deadlocked in the rebounding battle, 32-32, but Winona State made the most of its nine offensive boards to the tune of 17 second-chance points.
Four Cougars scored in double-digits in the game as Sioux Falls shot a blistering 52 percent compared to a 46 percent clip by WSU. However, the Warriors held the edge from beyond the arc, shooting 39 percent, compared to the Cougars' 25 percent effort.
Hustad was Winona State's scoring leader with 23 while pulling down six rebounds and Fee led the way on the glass with seven boards and 19 points. Sydney Lodermeier went 2-2 from downtown and added 15 points.
The Warriors return home next weekend for a pair of games against the NSIC North in Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 in Winona.
